Product Overview

The SE-450 series is MEAN WELL's classic 450W single-output enclosed switching power supply, offering 7 output voltage options from 3.3V to 48V - the widest voltage coverage in any standard enclosed supply. Unlike the LRS N2 series, the SE-450 includes unique low-voltage models (3.3V, 5V) for legacy and specialized industrial equipment.

The SE-450 uses a switchable 90~132VAC / 180~264VAC input (selected via built-in switch) and supports 254~370VDC input. Built around a 100KHz switching design with built-in DC fan cooling, active inrush current limiting, and remote sense capability, it delivers reliable power across a -10C to +60C temperature range. This is a budget-friendly, UL-certified workhorse for standard industrial applications.

Measuring 225x124x50mm, the SE-450 is slightly taller than the LRS N2 family but shares the same footprint. The remote sense function (via CN102 connector) compensates for voltage drop over long cable runs - a feature not available on the LRS N2 series. For 3.3V and 5V high-current applications (up to 75A), the SE-450 is often the only enclosed solution available without going to open-frame designs.

The SE-450 is UL62368-1 listed with EAC TP TC 004 certification, and design reference to BS EN/EN62368-1. It includes short-circuit, overload (105%~150%), overvoltage, and over-temperature protection. Note: This model is not compliant with EN61000-3-2 harmonic current limits for certain EU applications. The overload and OVP protections require a power cycle to recover.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the SE-450 differ from the LRS-350N2 or LRS-600N2?

The SE-450 is a different product family focused on versatility and value. Key differences: (1) 7 voltage options including 3.3V and 5V not available in LRS N2; (2) remote sense capability for voltage-drop compensation; (3) active inrush current limiting; (4) no peak power capability - it is a standard-output supply; (5) narrower temperature range (-10~60C vs -20~70C); (6) 2G vibration (vs 5G); (7) 2-year warranty (vs 3-year); (8) lower efficiency (74-88% vs 85-92%). Choose the SE-450 when you need 3.3V/5V outputs, remote sense, or a budget-friendly UL-listed 450W supply.

What is the remote sense function and when should I use it?

The remote sense (CN102 connector) allows the power supply to monitor the voltage at the load rather than at its output terminals. This compensates for voltage drop in the connecting cables - up to 0.5V per wire. It is essential for 3.3V and 5V applications where even small voltage drops can cause equipment malfunction. To use it: connect +S to the positive load terminal and -S to the negative load terminal via the CN102 connector.

Can the SE-450 be used in EU countries?

The SE-450 is not compliant with BS EN/EN61000-3-2 harmonic current limits. It should NOT be used in end equipment meeting ALL of these conditions: (a) used within the EU, (b) connected to 220VAC+ public mains, (c) installed in equipment with average input power >75W, and (d) part of a lighting system. Professional equipment rated >1,000W and symmetrically controlled heating elements <=200W are exempt.

Why are 3.3V and 5V models rated at lower wattage?

The 3.3V model is rated at 247.5W (75A x 3.3V) and the 5V model at 375W (75A x 5V) because the output wattage is limited by the secondary-side rectifier design, not by current capacity. All models from 12V and above deliver the full 450W. The lower-voltage models are optimized for current delivery at the expense of total wattage.

How do I recover after protection trips?

Unlike LRS N2 models which auto-recover from most faults, the SE-450 requires a power cycle (turn off AC, wait, turn on) to recover from overload, overvoltage, and short-circuit protection events. Only over-temperature protection auto-recovers. Plan your system design accordingly if this behavior affects your application.
