Product Overview

The MDR-40 series is a platform shift from the 22.5mm MDR-10/20 to a 40mm 40W form factor with three major upgrades: (1) DC OK relay dry contact (30V/1A) replaces the active sourcing signal; (2) Class I Division 2 Hazardous Locations T4 certification; and (3) EN61000-6-2 heavy industrial immunity vs light industrial on 10/20. The voltage lineup changes too: 15V is dropped; 48V is added.

The MDR-40 accepts universal 85~264Vac input (120~370Vdc) with 1.1A/115V, 0.7A/230V AC current and 30A/115V, 60A/230V inrush. Four voltages: 5V (6A/30W), 12V (3.33A/40W), 24V (1.7A/40.8W), and 48V (0.83A/39.8W). The 5V model is rated at 30W due to thermal limits. Wide voltage adjust ranges: 5~6V, 12~15V, 24~30V, and 48~56V. Efficiency ranges from 78% at 5V to 88% at 24V/48V. Hold-up is 50ms at 230Vac. No-load is <0.75W.

The DC OK relay is the headline upgrade: a dry contact (normally closed when output is healthy, opens on fault) rated 30V/1A. This is fundamentally more useful for PLC/SCADA integration than the MDR-10/20's active sourcing signal -- it directly feeds a PLC discrete input with no level-matching circuit. The overload protection remains CC limiting at 105~150% with auto-recovery, ideal for motor starts. OVP triggers output shutdown requiring restart.

Safety certifications are the strongest in the MDR family: UL508, UL62368-1, TUV BS EN/EN62368-1, Class I Div 2 Groups A/B/C/D HazLoc T4, EAC, BSMI, AS/NZS 60950.1, and BIS IS13252 (except 48V). How does the DC OK relay differ from MDR-10/20's active signal?

MDR-10/20 uses an active sourcing output that drives a voltage proportional to the output (e.g. 18~27V for 24V model). This limits drive current to 20~50mA and requires matching voltage levels. MDR-40 uses a passive relay dry contact (NC when healthy, opens on fault) rated 30V/1A -- this is a universal interface: it works with any PLC voltage (5V, 12V, 24V, 48V), draws no power, provides galvanic isolation, and handles higher current for annunciator panels or external relays. The relay closes at power-up and opens on any DC fault or power loss.

What does HazLoc Class I Div 2 T4 mean for my installation?

Class I Division 2 means the MDR-40 is certified for areas where flammable gases/vapors (Groups A/B/C/D: acetylene, hydrogen, ethylene, propane) are present only under abnormal conditions (not continuously). T4 indicates surface temperature won't exceed 135C. This makes MDR-40 suitable for petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and process industry control panels -- it's the only MDR with this certification. Always install per local electrical code for hazardous areas.

Is BIS available for MDR-40-48?

No. The 48V model is explicitly excluded from BIS IS13252 certification. All other models (5V, 12V, 24V) carry BIS certification. If India compliance at 48V is required, contact your MEAN WELL sales representative for alternative 48V certified options.
