Product Overview

The XDR-120 series represents the pinnacle of MEAN WELL's 120W DIN rail technology. It achieves 94% efficiency with Active PFC (PF>0.98) in the same 30mm ultra-slim form factor as XDR-75 — a remarkable engineering feat. A game-changing new feature is the built-in ORing FET for reverse voltage protection, making it the first XDR model safe for direct connection to motors and inductive loads without external protection diodes.

With 85~305Vac input, dual-stage 80KHz PFC + 65KHz PWM architecture, and 200% peak power (240W for 5 seconds), the XDR-120 delivers exceptional performance. All 24/36/48V models achieve identical 94% efficiency — a rare level of consistency. The overload protection introduces intelligent hiccup mode below 30% Vo (vs latch on XDR-75), providing safer behavior for sustained fault conditions.

The ORing FET is a standout feature for industrial automation: when powering motors, solenoids, or inductive loads, the back-EMF generated during deceleration cannot flow back into the supply and cause damage. The XDR-120 actively blocks reverse voltages up to 16V (12V model), 35V (24V), 50V (36V), and 63V (48V) — eliminating the need for external protection circuitry.

Full XDR premium features: DC OK relay contact (30Vdc/1A), remote ON/OFF (RC+/RC-: <0.8V=ON, 3.3~5V=OFF), 20ms unified hold-up, conformal coating, 3 terminal types (Screw/LA/PI). DNV Marine, SEMI F47, HazLoc Class I Div 2, IEC61010 certified. Same 30x125.2x116mm chassis. 5-year warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the XDR-120 differ from the XDR-75?

The XDR-120 delivers 120W vs 75W (+60%) in the same 30mm chassis. Key upgrades: (1) Active PFC (PF>0.98) — XDR-75 has none; (2) 94% efficiency (vs 91%); (3) ORing FET for reverse voltage protection — unique to XDR-120; (4) 80KHz PFC + 65KHz PWM dual-stage (vs single 65KHz PWM on XDR-75); (5) 20ms unified hold-up at all voltages (vs 16ms/10ms); (6) hiccup mode below 30% Vo (vs latch below 10% Vo on XDR-75); (7) remote ON threshold <0.8V (vs <0.5V). All XDR premium features remain: DC OK relay, 85~305Vac, -40~85C, DNV/ SEMI/HazLoc, 5-year warranty.

What does the ORing FET do and why is it important?

The ORing FET is an internal semiconductor switch that blocks reverse current flow. When powering motors, solenoids, or inductive loads, the back-EMF generated during deceleration can feed back into the power supply output and cause damage. The XDR-120's ORing FET automatically blocks this reverse voltage without any external protection diodes. Maximum reverse voltage ratings: 12V: <16V, 24V: <35V, 36V: <50V, 48V: <63V. This is a feature typically found only in much more expensive industrial supplies.

Why does the XDR-120 have Active PFC when the XDR-75 doesn't?

At 120W, Active PFC becomes necessary for EN61000-3-2 harmonic compliance with meaningful power margins. The XDR-75 at 75W sits below the threshold where PFC is mandated. The XDR-120's 80KHz PFC stage achieves PF>0.98 at 115VAC while maintaining 94% overall efficiency — an exceptional combination of power quality and conversion efficiency.

How does the overload protection behave at low output voltages?

Unlike the XDR-75 which enters a latch mode below 10% Vo, the XDR-120 uses hiccup mode below 30% Vo. Hiccup mode periodically attempts to restart the output. If the fault clears, normal operation resumes automatically. This is safer for sustained fault conditions and more field-friendly — technicians don't need to manually reset after a temporary short circuit.

Is the XDR-120 suitable for direct motor connection?

Yes — specifically designed for it. The combination of ORing FET (blocks motor back-EMF), 200% peak power (handles motor starts), and 600% transient current (handles inrush) makes the XDR-120 exceptionally well-suited for direct motor, solenoid, and actuator connections. This is the primary application where the XDR-120 surpasses both the XDR-75 and all NDR series models.
